The Mercer County Coon Hunters Association had another successful year in 2008 and are well on the way to a great year in 2009. Our annual Mid-Winter Jamboree was held on February 3 at our clubhouse on Henry Road. There were 35 coonhounds of various breeds on display in the bench show and 34 dogs doing their thing in the treeing contests.  Attendance from local hunters was quite good, with several picking up a new puppy from many vendors. Coonhunters and pickup trucks filled the parking lot and the clubhouse gave everyone a worm place to swap hunting stories.
On March 28, the club hosted a special event sponsored by the tree in Walker Breeders and Franciers Association. This bench show and night hunt attracted 41 coonhounds. The special breed events are open to all United Kennel Club registered dogs with the National Breed Organizations providing special awards to their members' dogs.
In the coming year the club will be hosting four more competition coonhound night hunts and bench shows sanctioned by the United Kennel Club, a two day coonhound held trial sanctioned by the Western Pennsylvania Field Trial Association, and several UKC licensed hunt tests (see schedule below). The hunt tests are new this year and offer a new prospective to the competition hunting agenda. These hunts are conducted with only one dog who must demonstrate that his/her ability to trail and tree a raccoon within one hour without committing more than two faults. Firearms and alcohol are not permitted, nor is any game killed in by of the competition hunts. Dogs are evaluated according to a prescribed set of rules for each event, awards are presented at the clubhouse after all dogs and handlers have completed their hunt.
In addition to the events held on our 147 acre club grounds, our members also participate in Mercer County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs activities including fund raising events, Youth Conservation Camp, and Youth Field Day.
lf you are at all interested in trying a coon hunt, receiving valuable dog training and hunting advice, entering the coonhound competition hunts and shows, or just like to spend time with great sportsmen, get involved in your local club.

Meetings are the first Tuesday of each month and start at 7:00 PM.
Membership is open to anyone interested in promoting environmental conservation, good sportsmanship and bettering the spot of raccoon hunting.
